Historical Background:
The Ship Endeavour, originally named the Earl of Pembroke, was built in June 1764 by Thomas Fishburn. With a displacement of 368 tonnes, an overall length of 106 feet, a keel length of 97 feet, and a maximum beam of 29 feet, she featured a broad rounded bow, a flat stern, and was square-rigged. Initially used as a collier for transporting coal, she was commissioned as a Royal Navy ship on 5th April 1768 and renamed Ship Endeavour. The ship was refitted at the Deptford shipyard near London, where new decks, cabins, and spaces were constructed to accommodate officers, scientists, servants, marines, and crew, totaling 94 men.
Under the command of Captain James Cook, the Endeavour embarked on a groundbreaking voyage of exploration. Departing from Plymouth, England, on 8th August 1768, the ship circumnavigated the globe, returning to London on 13th July 1771. The expedition aimed to observe the transit of Venus across the sun and to estimate stellar distances, contributing valuable data for calculating the universe's parameters.
Later, the Endeavour served in the American War of Independence and was eventually scuttled with a dozen other vessels off Newport, Rhode Island, in 1778.
