Historical Background:
Prinz Eugen was a German Admiral Hipper-class heavy cruiser, the third in a series of five, which served in the Kriegsmarine during World War II. Named after Prince Eugene of Savoy, an Austrian general of the 18th century, Prinz Eugen played a significant role in Operation Rheinübung, a German attempt in May 1941 to disrupt Allied merchant shipping across the Atlantic, alongside the battleship Bismarck.
Following the German surrender in May 1945, Prinz Eugen was transferred to the United States Navy as spoils of war and participated in the Operation Crossroads nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll. The wreck remains partially visible above the water surface, with one of her propellers displayed at the Marine-Ehrenmal Laboe naval memorial in Germany.
