The Santa Maria, along with the Niña and the Pinta, comprised Christopher Columbus's fleet on his historic voyage funded by the Spanish monarchy in 1492. Departing from Palos de la Frontera, Spain, on August 3, 1492, the expedition aimed to find a western sea route to Asia. On October 12, 1492, the crew aboard the Santa Maria made landfall in the Bahamas, believing they had reached the East Indies. This voyage fundamentally altered the course of history, heralding the beginning of European exploration and colonization of the Americas.
Despite its monumental significance, the Santa Maria's journey was not without challenges. On Christmas Day of 1492, the ship ran aground on the shores of present-day Haiti. Columbus ordered the construction of a fort using the remnants of the ship, naming it La Navidad. The fate of the Santa Maria highlights the perils and triumphs of exploration, solidifying its place in maritime history as one of the most famous ships ever to sail.
